How to Hire Heavy Equipment Mechanics

Hydraulics, field independence and safety judgement matter more than machine brand familiarity. Here is how to recruit for what actually determines performance.

The short answer

Prioritise four things: genuine hydraulic diagnostic ability, independence in field service, welding and structural repair capability, and demonstrable safety judgement around stored energy and suspended loads. Manufacturer-specific experience is useful but transfers faster than any of the four.

Hydraulics is the dividing line

Machines fail where they work. A mechanic who is excellent in a workshop may struggle when the same fault appears on a muddy site, three hours from the parts store, with the site manager asking when it will move.

A field service mechanic is only as effective as the vehicle they arrive in.
